Small group instruction is the ideal way to engage students. Having a horseshoe table will allow for more small-group learning with groups of 4 - 8 students. A horseshoe table will provide the space for students to gather, build or construct with base ten blocks, and other materials as students engage in hands-on problem-solving in the area of math and science. As well as, work in collaborative pairs to discuss or explain the process they use to solve a problem. The horseshoe table allows the teacher to directly monitor the interactions and discourse as it takes place in real-time. Providing the opportunity for immediate feedback and support. Understanding 3-digit numbers and place value is the foundation of number sense. Base ten blocks will provide students the visual and hands-on experiences to build and break numbers apart while adding and subtracting with regrouping. Students will use base ten blocks to physically model the process of regrouping to add and/or subtract 3-digit numbers. Students will verbally explain to a partner their process to solve the problem and later draw a model and write the process for solving a 3-digit number with regrouping and without regrouping. Dri-erase markers are needed for students because we use whiteboards daily to respond both in reading and math. Students show their work using the dri-erase markers on their boards, allowing me to assess what they know and or what they may be confused about prior to students completing problems on paper. We have a high need for dri-erase markers because we use them so much and they dry out due to high usage.
