An integral part of middle school science standards involves students researching, designing, testing, and evaluating the effectiveness of models, and STEM kits are a great way to insure these standards are being met (especially in a multi-grade classroom). Not only are the activities engaging for students because of their real-world application, but they also give students hands-on experience and a way to really "show what they know." When I think of STEM, I think of the saying, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day- Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” (Lao Tzu; Chinese philosopher). STEM gives students the opportunity to learn how to think and problem solve and persevere when things aren't going the way they thought they would and these are all skills they will need throughout their lifetime.
