The ability to decode is an important step to reading comprehension. The skill is not intuitive, but needs to be practiced to do it automatically. Until this is automatic, comprehension is impacted. Decoding practice also needs to be done with support and corrective feedback to make sure the skill is practiced correctly. The items requested allow students the opportunity to get the practice in foundational skills, specifically decoding, while having visual or auditory support and feedback (ELA RF K.3-RF 5.3). Some items were selected to create games and activities for students to take home to practice at night and over weekends. The more the students practice the skill, the sooner it will become natural which will help students read with accuracy to support their comprehension (ELA RF 1.4-RF 5.4).
