I teach sixty of the liveliest young writers in the Louisiana bayou. My students range from 14 to 17 years old and come to school with a variety of life and educational experiences – some of them are years behind grade-level, others are right on target. They do have one thing in common: they love a good story. Though they can be intimidated, my kids have successfully bested the Bard, considered Kidd, and analyzed Angelou. This semester, they are writing. All of my students have passed English I. We are using literature to inspire our writing by learning from successful writers and using the themes and conflicts in novels to fuel our debates and our writing.
Even though it is a writing class, we read every day. In our classroom, we read in literature circles. Students read with one another and help each other understand what we read by responding to the text as a group. With their classmates, students participate in and lead discussions about the literature they read.
