Engaging Middle School students in active learning and critical thinking is essential in order for students to deeply understand mathematics at high levels. Recently I read a book called "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" and one of the findings of the author's research is that students work much more effectively and do more actual thinking when they are working in groups of 3 and standing while working on VNPS or Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces. I am requesting 5 of these portable white boards to be able to move them around the classroom and create multiple spaces to implement this idea in my classroom.
My goal is to have my students move beyond rote memorization or simply mimicking what is being modeled and create an environment in which students are the ones that are doing the thinking in the classroom. With these whiteboards, my students will be able to visibly display their thinking while collaborating with their groups and discussing problems worth solving. Middle School students are amazing and capable of success when they are allowed to use their creativity coupled with structure and I can't wait to use these new portable whiteboards to help build a thinking classroom in mathematics!
