This year in an effort to help keep students engaged when learning math, I have found several interactive digital math manipulatives and learning games. Many of these require drag and drop items or interaction. When using the trackpad alone, this can become tedious and takes away from the task. Students in 4th grade are working with numbers as large as the millions and when creating these numbers using base ten blocks, they are having to click and drag twenty or more blocks to build a single number. Being able to click and manipulate easily with the use of a mouse will help students answer and build math equations quickly and easily. Student growth and development across all subjects is key and the use of i-Ready, a level-based instructional program, is a tool that helps meet all students at their current levels. The lessons are also interactive, with both audio and visual components. Headphones easily stored and accessed, as well as fully functioning with adequate volume, will make this part of the students day effective. Students will be able to fully hear lessons and show growth across lessons passed in both reading and math. Fourth grade students move further into the learning of fractions. The fraction kits requested will allow students to build a hexagon using a variation of fraction shapes. This will help solidify that a shape can be broken into different fractions, and that different fractions can be joined to create a whole. This concept can be difficult for some to understand, so having a hands on visual, that does not have 1 correct way of creating, will further help students grasp the concept.
