Research has shown that every time you see a child playing superheroes, digging a hole, or chasing a classmate at recess it is with a purpose. This is according to a blog written by Melissa Davidson called "The Importance of purposeful play in Early Education" for Landmark 360 Teaching. Melissa Further sates that purposeful play can be play that is guided by educators through games, art, math, science, and general fun with the purpose of teaching something specific. Therefore, the items I have requested on Donors Choose will definitely help progress my students academic, social, and emotional development. For example, according to the Autism Cafe (a blog by a mother with an autistic son) there are three major benefits to kitchen play. They are as follows: 1.) Language and communication-- her son has learned new words such as "stir" and "bake" and also the names of different foods and dishes. 2.) Pretend play--engages the imagination and helps the early learner to make associations with the pretend play and the real world actions it takes to create a recipe. 3.) Independence and confidence--learners are able to safely practice what it takes to manipulate their way around the kitchen. This is why the life style dream kitchen from the Kaplan Early Learning Company, the multicultural play food assortment will definitely be an asset in my classroom for developing my students to be the best they can be. Just as important as kitchen play is in early education so is career play and family play. For many of the same reasons as stated above. This is why I am also asking for the classroom vet set, the pediatrician activity set, community block people, the doctor play set and the washable baby dolls from Lake Shore Learning Company.
