My students desire to have more challenging and exciting extracurricular opportunities at my school. One frequently requested opportunity is a school chess club. Many of my students have transferred to this district within a few years ago, and these students have mentioned how they have participated in chess tournaments before. Some of them have even placed. These chess sets would allow my students to participate in a school-led chess club held at least twice a week in my classroom. We would be able to learn how to play the game, utilize chess strategies, and have a safe environment for students to participate in friendly challenges against their classmates. Playing chess would help my students make progress in several areas including critical thinking, decision making based on their opponent's perspective, advanced cognitive abilities, and the art of strategy making. All of these skills spill over into every content area in school: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and the Arts, as well as Athletics. These chess sets will allow our students to participate in a chess club, as well as eventually participate in future tournaments. Chess club would also boost student morale, as the pandemic has inflicted many changes and challenges in students' lives. If all of this project is funded, dozens of students will be able to enjoy the thrills of chess and develop their minds to reach their great potentials. I ask that you will play a part in that process.
