These materials will enhance my CSI unit (students learn about and mimic the way forensic investigators gather evidence, complete lab analysis, and use evidence to come to conclusions), bridge building unit (they design and build small wooden bridges), chemistry (identifying acid vs base, elements, etc.), health investigations (PBL where they diagnose diseases and ailments from fictional characters), and practice their investigative and higher-order thinking skills through various STEM challenges and higher-order thinking activities. I believe a balance of worksheet practice and hands-on investigations makes the material easier to understand and motivates the students to become independent thinkers and problem-solvers. It is my goal to excite the students about the material in fun and engaging ways. Even though I work primarily with 3-5th graders, I have also made a point of reaching out to the primary grades as well to provide their teachers with materials to begin deductive reasoning and STEM-based science investigation early on, hence the K-2 materials. So many of our students have suffered the effects of online learning for over a year.
