A calm corner or a sensory area in the classroom is a developmentally appropriate addition to any classroom, and especially a primary special education classroom. One of the major focuses in my classroom is teaching, working towards, and reinforcing positive and safe strategies to confront and manage their "big feelings". A sensory area typically includes lots of padding, pillows, bean bags and other soft things that allow for children to be safe if they throw themselves down, as well as soothing materials like weighted blankets, stuffed animals, and fidgets that ease their mind and comfort them. The pandemic has deeply affected us all emotionally, and I think that now is the perfect time to create a safe space for students to figure out how they are feeling, as well as help guide them towards a coping strategy or soothing material that may lead them to some peace.
