Life science begins with the smallest unit of life, the cell! Middle school standard MS-L-S1-1 asks teachers to investigate cells with students and provide evidence that living things are made of cells. In my classroom we learn about the parts of cells and their functions, but the best evidence to provide students about cells is to be able to see them with their own eyes! A digital microscope provides all students (despite their ability to operate a microscope on their own) with the ability to see cells, even in a pandemic. When that microscope can be projected for an entire class to view, the opportunities for learning and collaboration are increased. I find that supplementary videos and clips are helpful for students to see how the parts of cells work together (MS-L-S1-2). Often, I include videos and clips in student assignments to reinforce learning, but since students learn at a different pace, I believe that earbuds for use with their issued Chromebooks will be beneficial for everyone.
