This is the first year that my students are seeing and being asked to engage with scientific content on a daily basis because this is the first year they have a departmentalized schedule. And as a first year teacher, I am still working on collecting classroom supplies that are science specific. Many of my students are missing a foundational understanding of the world around them, which makes learning grade level scientific content very difficult. My students also lack access to a literature rich environment, which research shows can help improve a student literacy skills. By creating a classroom library of STEM related texts, students will be exposed daily to science specific concepts and vocabulary that they haven’t seen before in ELA or Math. This paired with the educational models to help students visualize the concepts we cover in 4th grade, I am hoping to help get students where they need to be in Science!
