Because of the Covid pandemic, I have seen an increase in stress, nervousness, and trauma. Students need more practice with focusing, and I have been trying to help students use mindfulness strategies to focus. There are more resources available out there than what I have access to in my classroom. They are in my Donors Choose cart right now! The Conscious Discipline and Morning Meetings books help build a structure, community, and focus that is proven effective through research. There are picture books that could help teach these life lessons, and they can help identify characteristics of mental, emotional, and social health behaviors-Health (3)1.1. In addition, I am in a portable, and I limited space for a calm down corner. The fold-up chairs will help provide a movable compact space that can be utilized as a calm down area where the two of us can talk. Because they fold up, they can be stored out of the way and only used when necessary. The other component of my Donors Choose cart focuses on academic needs. The Scholastic News magazine subscriptions will give my students access to nonfiction text on a regular basis. They will be able to use the magazines to highlight evidence and identify text features. I need these nonfiction magazines and animal books in my classroom. Students will be able to take the magazines home and read and reread them to improve reading comprehension (ELA-RI.3.1, RI 3.2, RI 3.3, RI. 3.4, RI 3.5, RI 3.6, RI 3.7, RI 3.8).
