In my classroom, I strive to create an environment and culture where my students feel safe, seen, and comfortable. If they don't have their basic needs met, I can't expect them to be able to learn. After talking with my students about factors that interfere with their learning, I know that discomfort is a huge problem for them. Together, we brainstormed ways that we can eliminate distractions and improve comfort to increase their capacity to learn. Research shows that we all learn differently. Some of us don't mind sitting at a desk while we work. Others (like myself) prefer to stand to maintain some mobility. This makes sense because our bodies are built to move! Sitting still on a hard surface for prolonged periods is both uncomfortable and unnatural. As of now, my students have the option to stay at their desk while they work, sit on the floor, or move to a lab bench where they can stand or sit on a stool. My goal is to expand their options to include balance balls, soft floor stools, and bean bag chairs. This project will help me provide the best learning environment possible for my students.
