Lummis is a small, community school located in Las Vegas. We serve a very diverse enrollment from Pre-K through 5th grade. Lummis receives limited funding, although we have several programs serving high needs students. Like others, our students have been significantly affected by the pandemic. Being remote for most of the year, students have returned to school lacking academic and social skills. Receiving supplemental materials will greatly increase our students' ability to grasp and retain, not only the standards expected of first grade students, but the kindergarten standards that may not have been mastered due to circumstances beyond their control. Our students have previously enjoyed working with community supplies. Due to COVID restrictions, each student requires individual manipulatives and supplies resulting in much faster consumption of daily materials. Also, due to Covid, we have had a much bigger need for copy paper since we’ve had to make use of paper copies for much our curriculum. In this way, materials do not change hands a number of times... students have their own personal copies of everything for sanitary conditions. Colored pens are used with writing. Students are accustomed to using different colors to identify Introduction/Conclusion, topic sentences, and details. A supply of these colored pens will help us be prepared through the end of the year. Although I try to keep screen time to a minimum in first grade, our students are issued chromebooks in case of a sudden switch to remote learning again (quarantine, etc). They are not issued headphones. Some students have their own, but I have supplied them to many of my students. It is important for students to use a single set of headphones annually. My hope is to be able to help my students have an amazing year in first grade. Thank you for your consideration.
