Our students come from a wide variety of households and financial backgrounds who all have one goal: educating a child with great care - using their hearts, their hands, and their heads. The sewing machine and supplies will give my students the tools they need to let their creativity run wild and bring their ideas to life. In our array of handwork tools, the sewing machine is the most complex. We will work with it during eighth grade as the students learn about the industrial revolution; a practical demonstration of the incredible changes technology can bring. It is always interesting to observe the children as they take their first turn on the machine. Some of them go so cautiously that the machine barely runs, while others have lead feet and have difficulty stopping and staying on an even line. They are steering with their hands, accelerating with one foot, and learning to keep their fabric within the boundaries. They also learn to anticipate when to stop and how to reverse and you will see why I told them this is kind of an early driver’s ed experience. After hand sewing hundreds of stitches, the middle school students are ready for (and truly appreciative of) a sewing machine. Integrating the mechanics of the sewing machine is integral as they gain an appreciation of modern conveniences. The speed and strength behind these stitches require them to focus even more on the task at hand, as removing machine-made mistakes is quite tedious. They learn sewing machine basics, how to understand the terminology used in patterns, how to read a commercial pattern, and how to make adjustments to create a garment for their measurements.
