Printmaking is an older way of mass producing artwork on clothing, posters, and other surfaces. Though it’s an older process, it’s still abundantly being used today (We can talk about protest art, anti racism, and street art with these materials). The history and the act of printmaking is something I enjoyed learning in college, and would love to implement it in my art room for my students to feel the same magic as I did. I wish I had printmaking growing up because you learn so much while doing it! Printmaking allows you to create art in a different way: like how your art prints backwards, learning about different types of ink, understanding different types of tools you can use to carve your art, and how you are able to use wood, styrofoam, linoleum, cardboard, etc. to carve out your work to print onto paper, cloth, poster board, and many more surfaces. Something I love about printmaking is you can teach these materials to Kindergarteners! It’s such a great way to grow their muscles. I truly believe in my students’ curiosity, creativity, and eagerness to learn that beautiful artwork will be made with these materials.
