Everyday students have school wide read to self time. However, currently my students with special needs do not have books that they are able to read at their independent reading level that are of high interest to them. Studies show the more students read everyday the more successful they will become as a reader. I want my students to have access to books that they are interested in and are able to read that will still help them feel included in a mainstream classroom environment. It is also very important that students use books as mirrors where they can see themselves represented and as windows to see into other cultures.
