My students are the founding high schoolers at our expeditionary learning charter school, and they are eager to help determine what high school looks like as a freshman and sophomore. My students have a variety of backgrounds - they come from neighboring charter, public, and home schools - and they have many different experiences with their previous education. Most have come to our smaller school to gain closer relationships with teachers and to engage in the authentic learning experience of an EL school. In line with our project-based learning model, I work with my peers to collaborate on cross-curricular projects that are in line with the common core and develop local and global leaders; I want my students to be critical thinkers, strong readers, and risk-taking writers, as well as empathetic, kind citizens of the world.
