As educators, we expect students to come to school ready to learn. However, as a professional school counselor, I know that many students come to school carrying the burden of big emotions that they do not know how to process. Through the natural language of play, students can communicate their feelings, thoughts, and experiences as a way to help resolve their problems. It is vital that all students not only receive the best academic support but also the best social/emotional support as well. All students deserve a safe space to process through difficult emotions and to learn about the appropriate ways to cope with any obstacles that may cause stress or anxiety. Students will engage in play therapy using items such as legos and the sand tray to express their thoughts and feelings.
