My students were severely impacted by COVID restrictions. As a self-contained special education classroom, my students need structure. The uncertainty and disruptions caused by COVID have had major impacts on their ability to retain learned content and manage their behavior. Many of our families elected to go with distance learning to preserve their child's health which meant that they were further away from the supports they needed. My students love bright colors! We have been copying and printing resources for our students both in class and at home but they have all been in black and white. Color makes the activity more fun and engaging. Having a color printer would also allow us to print out our student's online work where they often include colorful photos. They would be so happy to see their work in color up on the wall or to put up on their fridge at home! We teach to the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Often our lessons are at the student's level which means we are teaching to standards several grade levels below. A recent activity we did was writing a friendly letter to a classmate on the computer. This covered Grade 3 writing standard: "With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others." Then they added their picture to the letter. Imagine how excited they would be to get that letter in the mail with their picture printed in color! Please consider my project to bring color to my student's lessons!
