I am truly grateful you have given me the opportunity to tell you why I have chosen to ask for this project to get funded. My name is Heidi Watkins. I will be a first-year teacher in the great state of Texas this upcoming school year. After much thinking and preparing for my classroom, I have truly felt a calling to make sure that I try everything in my power to instill a love of reading in every child that enters my classroom. I have compiled a list of books including the ever-popular favorites in first grade like The Magic Treehouse and Dragon Masters to classics like Kevin Henkes Wimberly Worried. I have also made it a top priority to include diverse books with characters like Sadiq, Katie Woo, Keena Ford, and Sofia Martinez. My hope with the books I have on my list is to not only instill a love of reading but to make sure that my students know they are never alone. No matter how unique or different they may feel at times, there is someone out there that has felt the same way. I feel that books can open a world of possibilities and promote inclusion.
