The items on my list will help me to teach Grade 4 Nevada Academic Content Standards such ELA RI and RL 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, and 4.6 because the books I have ordered will give students engaging complex texts to dive into and read. The non-fiction math picture books will not only help them with the Informational ELA NVACS, but will also help them grasp math concepts such as 4.NBT.A.1 regarding place value understanding and the value of digits. These books coincide with the math curriculum I use and will be used to integrate reading skills with the Math Nevada Academic Content Standards and help build students conceptual knowledge of the math content. The math games will be used during my small group time when I am remediating with students that have unfinished learning from the day's math lesson and the other students will be playing the math games to practice the skills being taught at that time. During the small group time, I am able to address learning loss from previous years and identify the skills students need to make more than a year's worth of progress. Many of the books I purchased coincide with the knowledge-based curricular units that I teach throughout the year. When students are able to build background knowledge and vocabulary around certain subjects or themes that interest them, they are able to access more complex grade-level texts that normally would be too difficult for them. This means that a student that is below grade-level in reading can build their knowledge and content vocabulary so that they can make gains greater than a year's worth of progress. I believe this will help build their confidence and help eliminate any unfinished learning created by learning loss from the pandemic.
