My students will use this balsa wood to construct prototypes focused on structural engineering along with other STEM projects. Their project work involves the entire design process beginning with brainstorming solutions and ending with evaluating their designs. Being able to construct and test a physical prototype is a critical component of our learning process. Students become excited when they see a model of their own design come to life and look forward to putting it through the testing phase. It is common for students to become competitive with each other as they predict whose design will perform better. Their experiences with the projects become far more memorable by having the opportunity to prototype their designs.
