Flexible seating allows students to choose a location in the classroom to learn — especially during reading and writing time. Standard RL.5.2 will be heavily focused upon throughout the year, and flexible seating would give my students a wonderful way to learn this standard as well as countless others. Making sure students are comfortable and at home is an essential component of building classroom community and facilitating learning. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They are excited to work with their classmates in flexible teams and groups. They love to sit on beanbags and comfy pillows as we read and write and discuss our learning next to our faux fireplace. They have expressed to me their joy of being able to feel right at home in our cozy classroom.
