Due to the complexity of our language system, we have a lot of rules to spelling. To complicate things, there are almost more exceptions, than rules. That makes learning to read and spell really complicated for most young students. By having materials to use, we can build words, learn a rule, and manipulate the letters to make new words. With the students I have, they really struggle to understand the importance of vowels and consonants when it comes to spelling as well as spelling changes. i.e when to drop and 'e' or change a 'y' to 'i'.
