Our K-5 students need more opportunities to build and construct, especially when they escalate emotionally and need a safe place to calm. Boys and girls love to build and that love does not diminish by the 5th grade. From our youngest students to our oldest, building unique towers, houses, bridges, and other items helps them explore their abilities and calm their minds. Students have access to a Wellness Center and we even have room to save many student Lego projects so they can be worked on throughout the school year. However, we don't have enough Legos to meet the need. These activities support the mathematical practices of problem solving and perseverance, as we challenge students to build the tallest tower with finite pieces. They'll also address expository writing standards as students are asked to reflect in writing on their successes and failures in construction. Legos provide endless applications to the standards for our students including Social-Emotional Learning.
