The pandemic has created a social challenge, as many children were not immersed in a social setting prior to entering kindergarten. It is imperative for the social and academic language to be fostered in kindergarten. Therefore, to stimulate the social development of a child and to teach them how to interact with their peers, it is imperative to incorporate hands-on learning and play opportunities in the general education classroom.
The products and materials I included will make a difference in my students’ learning. The play toys will allow for positive interactions with peers. The math manipulatives will also encourage social and academic conversations. These items will all support the kindergarten standards. The social/play skills and problem solving skills can transfer to learning from home. Thank you for giving my little learners this opportunity!
Standards addressed are:
Literacy
SL.K.1
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
SL.K.1.A
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
SL.K.1.B
Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.
Describe and compare measurable attributes.
Math
K.MD.1. Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
K.MD.2. Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
