Artists have worked through personal conflict, emotions, and the impact important events have on a community for centuries. It is often through music, art, and theater that social change is heard and begins to improve. My students desperately need an outlet to work through the emotions they and their families have been feeling due to the pandemic. The art room is a natural fit for this because students can explore social-emotional topics that impact their lives through art and making personal choices in material and subject. Nevada Art Content Standard VA:Cn10.K.1 invites students to create art that tells a story about a life experience. The COVID pandemic has unfortunately caused an unfathomable amount of life experiences for my students. The resources requested will allow my young artists to explore emotions, use hands-on materials to show how they are feeling, and allow them to create meaningful art. The feeling and emotions dough mats will provide will make a concrete example of facial expressions connected to emotions. The social emotional photo library set will be used to show photographic examples of feelings and reactions to real life situations. The hands-on arts and crafts materials will be used to allow students aged 5-9 to work through their emotions and concerns felt during this very trying time in world history.
