Several studies explore the long-term benefits of art in therapy and its impact on mental health recovery. Art-based practices are of high benefit to psychological and social recovery particularly in the areas of self-discovery, self-expression, relationships and social identity. (Van Lith, Schofield & Fenner, 2013). One report found that youth involved in child protection and/or mental health systems report increased emotional regulation, social and coping skills, as well as improved self-esteem and resilience when presented with creative activities in therapy (Coholic, 2011). Art materials requested for our purposes will be utilized in individual and small-group counseling sessions. Students will be able to process difficult experiences and emotions using paints and other creative mediums. Additional requests in this project aim to provide learning around executive functioning, social-emotional awareness and resiliency skills.
