Teaching Ecology is tricky when you cannot go out doors and experience ecosystems in person. Bringing a miniature ecosystem in the classroom allows my students to witness systems in action up-close and personal. Our planet is a water world, yet seeing what is happening in the water is increasingly difficult. An aquarium will allow my students to witness life in the water, and the interactions that take place between fish, invertebrates, amphibians, and plants. These first-hand observations will provide experiential understanding of the world we live in and escape the limitations of their misconceptions by witnessing life forms they may never have previously observed.
