In past school years, our curriculum has centered on canon novels. While there are benefits to teaching these, I know there are many stories and perspectives that are not represented. It is my goal to diversify our curriculum by selecting a contemporary historical fiction book. My students are enthusiastic to read literature where they can see themselves represented in the characters and learn about other cultures as well. The book Like a Love Story by Abdi Nazemian follows three main characters growing up in New York City during the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1989. We will use this text to understand the history and context of the time period, practice following multiple perspectives, and analyze themes of belonging and forgiveness. I am motivated to incorporate a highly regarded novel into our curriculum this year. I know students will benefit tremendously from this opportunity, and I am excited to see their growth! Thank you for your support in purchasing new novels.
