Flexible seating will give my students the freedom to choose where they want to work or sit in the classroom. As they work on building their independence, they also need to learn how to make choices. Currently, they are sitting at a desk. This year I have been teaching them that they can sit anywhere in the room to work. However, we do not have optional seating besides their chair or sitting on the floor. They have been making choices to sit around the room on the floor. My students have been more engaged and excited when they have the opportunity to move around the classroom! The items that I have selected will give my students more seating options. The rocking chair would benefit my students with autism because the rocking back and forth gives them comfort and helps regulate their bodies. The floor cushions will be soft and warmer than sitting on the floor and can easily be moved anywhere in the classroom. The wobble stools and balance balls will help students focus and build core muscles that many of my students need to improve strength and balance. The high table and chairs will also be beneficial because they can stand as they work, which promotes better posture and blood flow. Students that stand tend to shift and move, which helps release energy that all my students need throughout the day. The stools give them the options to sit. The tabletop fountain would go in my calm down area to help students to self-regulate their emotions. I hope the addition of these items will engage and encourage learning even more!
