Students with multiple and severe disabilities have a hard time with skill acquisition but also have challenges with generalizing skills to their naturally occurring environments. My students are preparing to be successful in future environments (community, work, living, etc.). Making the classroom reflect the natural environments by providing stimulation activities and program common stimuli (same materials in the classroom as found in the natural environments) helps facilitate generalization. We will use a clock in and clock out a system similar to those commonly used in workplaces to clock in and out of the classroom. This will help students understand the differences between high school class schedules (fine arts, lunch, class) and workplace schedules (lunch break, break time, work). Additionally, classroom activities can integrate materials used in the student's future environments to increase opportunities for practice. For example, the barcode printer and scanner will allow us to label items in the classroom with a barcode. The barcode will be linked to a price. When the student scans the barcode, they will be shown the price on the computer. After having selected a few priced items, students will use those prices to complete money math activities. This is more interactive than simply being provided a list of prices and practices vocational skills students may use in their future (ex. as a cashier).
