One of the ways that we are able to deliver content to students when ideas are just too big for them to be practical -or even possible- to bring into the classroom and put directly into their hands is multimedia. Video clips, podcasts, interactive media, games, and video calls can fill the void when students are learning about ideas that cannot be demonstrated in a high school lab setting. There are hundreds of excellent resources available for teachers to use, especially right now when we are in the midst of a pandemic and sharing materials or working in close proximity may not be possible. As any teacher will attest, even one seemingly small and insignificant detail has the potential to make or break even the most well planned lesson. In my classroom, that detail is headphones. My students love using multimedia to access the content in my science classes, but when they are working independently, this becomes difficult because even in a small class, students with Chromebooks all using the same simulation becomes very noisy very quickly. My school does not have the resources to provide headphones to every classroom, nor can we be continually purchasing earbuds to give to our students when they inevitably lose them or forget them at home. I would like to purchase a set of 25 headphones for my classroom. This would be more than enough for each student in all of my classes to have a set of headphones available to them when they are working on their own. I would also like to purchase hanging storage units so that they can be put away in an easily accessible place. Finally aux splitters will let small groups interact with the same media at once, or instructional aids watch/listen along with students with special needs.
