This is my first year as a teacher and I have a wonderful group of 12 students that are on the mild to moderate end of the autistic spectrum. My goal is to provide them with the tools they need to learn while being sensitive to their unique methods of processing information. This project is geared to setting up my students for success in the classroom by using the principles of ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). ABA looks at all behavior being broken down into an antecedent (what occurs before the behavior), the behavior (in this case behavior that may be distracting to my students learning), and the consequence (in this case their learning and emotional well being). The tools in this project will focus on, and address the antecedents and getting in front of behavior that can be detrimental to my students learning. My students use several educational apps such as ABCMouse and Agnitus to learn on the iPads in our classroom. We are currently sharing a charging station with another classroom and need our own. The headphones will help students using an iPad or computer to stay on task as well as keep those not using these devices from being distracted. The ear muffs will help those sensitive to loud noises keep calm and focused during tasks such as reading or completing worksheets. The sensory toys and Playdoh will provide my students with an appropriate alternative stimulation to their varying stereotypy that can distract them from learning. We will use the sticker charts in our classroom to motivate students to stay on focus using a token economy. The students will earn stickers throughout the day and then turn in a completed chart to redeem for a reward.
