In place of reading To Kill a Mocking Bird, I wanted to read a more current novel that would pique students' interest more and engage them in an activity that may seem grueling for them. I am asking for a class set of the novel Dear Martin, that shares many of the same qualities as To Kill a Mocking Bird but is a little more current, and is a novel that I believe my students would be able to relate to. This will increase their level of engagement when reading the text, and help build their reading Lexile along the way.
