As this school year started and schoolwork begins, I have come to notice a few hardships for my 8 kids. We have started with our online assessments as you may know we complete these in school. As I sat down each of my students it became clear this was going to be harder than I thought not because they are autistic but because my boys don’t know how to use a mouse on a computer, they are used to clicking a screen. It was hard for me to see them get frustrated; they were pointing to the answers they wanted but the computer wouldn’t do as they wanted. We explained how the mouse works and I even had a small lesson on how to correctly use it, we put stickers on left side of the mouse just to help them understand which side to click. Yet even with this they where having a hard time they would forget and try to touch the screen again or they would click on the left side giving them all those options. I also have two of the boys with low motor skills making it very difficult for them to use the mouse. I ended up letting them point and I would click their answer. I don’t want to keep doing this as is not helping them be independent. This is why I have taken this step-in order to help them with the iPads. They will be able to complete their assessments on their own as it should be.
