I have included equipment in my cart that will help students be excited about physical activity. One of the largest items in my cart are scooters. These scooters will be used in my fitness unit to incorporate muscular endurance, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Students will work with partners to move about space using a variety of pathways, directions and muscles. Engaging in a fun activity, like the scooter, allows students to enjoy the time in gym and push themselves more than if it was just fitness stations. Since these kids have been home for so long, allowing them to have a different perspective and attitude about physical fitness is vital. I also have in my cart yarn balls. Yarn balls are the best way to play a physical game which teach cognitive concepts. One of my favorite games to teach is Calorie Buster. In this game, students throw yarn balls into the opponents hula hoops to clog up their arteries. We discuss body composition and the way that food impacts our bodies. The yarn balls are a great piece of equipment because they are soft enough to not hurt if accidently hit. This game is a perfect example of how physical games can teach cognitive concepts that would be normally boring and not as impactful. Also in my cart are jump ropes. A jump rope is one of the best pieces of equipment for a student to get a hold of. Jump ropes provide great cardiovascular endurance and are normally very easy to obtain and maintain outside of school. My goal is to start a Kangaroo Club which is a goal setting semester or year long unit which would incorporate jump roping skills and endurance competitions. In addition, we would use these for locomotor skills in class games.
