My Why As a School Social Worker: A sensory room is a therapeutic space within the school that has a variety of equipment which provides a space for our middle school students in special education to calm their bodies and focus their minds. The sensory room will help relieve students' anxiety and overstimulation that occurs when they are in the classroom setting. It allows students a short break to use items that have different textures, lighting, sounds and smells that provide relaxation for their bodies and minds to continue learning throughout the day. Special Education Students who spend time in a sensory room are able to improve their visual, auditory, tactile, emotional processing as well as their fine and gross motor skills. Children with Autism and Specific Learning Disabilities, learn best when given an opportunity and sensory space to take a break for 10-20 minutes every couple of hours during the school day. The benefits of a sensory room and play are that it helps build nerve connections in the brain related to emotional regulation, encourages motor and communication skills, it supports language development and problem solving through mindful activities in a safe space.
