I have a traditional classroom with 30+ desks and enough space to add flexible seating. At the beginning of the school year, my students did a dice-rolling ice breaker activity with a group of their peers. Once they were grouped, I instructed students to get comfortable. They could work at their desk, stand or even sit on the floor. This was by far, the best icebreaker activity, to date. I witnessed a number of students sitting on the floor engaging in meaningful conversation with their peers! I was astounded by their interaction. Weeks later, I still have students opting to sit on the floor to complete group activities. The groups working on the floor are in a world of their own--they are focused, productive and share a positive learning experience. I quickly learned that students can learn from anywhere. Flexible seating will keep my students more alert and focused on the learning. Last school year's challenges have taught me that students need a comfortable place to think, calm down or even be more creative. I have two large corners in my classroom to accommodate the additional seating. Students will greatly benefit from being able to choose a place in the classroom where they want to learn.
