Learning to take care of another living thing can be a limitless experience for people, especially children. Having a class pet, like this leopard gecko would bring an added sense of responsibility to the children's day that cannot be replicated by anything else. Leopard Gecko's are very friendly, low maintenance, and great first time pets. I will definitely be incorporating it into many of our science lessons this year, but I believe the greater value is of the practical life skills that a class pet brings. Research shows that consistent practical life skill practice helps promote children's development of their confidence, independence, coordination, and concentration. All of these skills are incredibly important for them to find success in any path they choose in this life. My students have never experienced having a class pet before, and as 5th graders, this may be their last chance. They are a very respectful group, they have taken on responsibilities in the classroom such as watering the plants, cleaning up after themselves and sanitizing high touch surfaces, organizing our class library, and much more. They have researched different types of animals that would be suitable for the classroom on their own free time for weeks. They have gone to the lengths of researching care costs, life spans, animal behavior, and safety. Their final vote was for a leopard gecko.
