We just started reading JUST MERCY in my English IV self-contained classroom. The novel set we have is intended for readers of a much higher level, and therefore, we need to try and procure the adapted version as quickly as possible. In this unit, we talk about the American justice system, debate the idea of the death penalty, and connect many of the issues in the book to a larger context seen in America today. We will discuss mass incarceration, police brutality, the evolving justice system, and connect it to issues here in Chicago today. A Long Walk to Water deals with access to resources in Africa, and the struggle that many face trying to survive from day to day. This book will be perfect for my reading classes, as it is low enough level for them to access, but still push them.
