As a special education teacher in a self-contained classroom, I want to provide my students the ability to read chapter books that are of high interest to them! Many of the chapter books that are available to our students to read are above their comprehension level. These high interest books that have been selected are books that will engage them while they learn to identify characters, settings, themes, and events, as well as learning to use context clues to understand new vocabulary and learn to answer comprehension questions. Many of the books are also related to history standards that must be learned prior to graduation. These high interest books will help make history come to life! I will use these books to ensure that all of their adaptive standards are met, while providing engaging books to teach the standards! Each student will also be able to have a copy of their own book when reading and will not have to rely on just listening to the book or trying to read the book via a document camera on the Promethean Board.
