9th graders experience a variety of stressors in their lives. From juggling academics, to family issues, to identity exploration - teens are looking for ways to stay connected and grounded. In fact, when I told my students about the opportunity to receive funding for materials for our classroom, the overwhelming majority expressed a desire for stress-reducing materials. As students transition into high school and back from distance learning, there is a high need for SEL materials in our classrooms. Since the beginning of this year, my students have asked for and used fidget toys, meditation books, and mindfulness spaces. With this donation, students will be able to use fidgets and mindfulness tools in our calm down corner when they experience stress or anxiety during the school day. One of my students said it best - "When teachers have calming things in their classroom it shows that they care about our anxieties and want us to feel better. It makes me feel like I matter to them."
