As English Learners in the United States, my students are faced with great obstacles, both in and out of school, yet they carry these challenges with great resiliency and desire to succeed. My students and their families came to the United States for better lives, only to be met at times with adversity, fear, discrimination, and hostility. In my classroom, I strive to create a safe, caring, environment, where students can be themselves, and feel comfortable exploring their newly forming identities as immigrants, English Learners, and Americans. We will use this text to explore ideas of American identity, interracial families, cultural diversity, and the realities of American society that divide us; together, we hope to address these ideas in a safe, brave space, and strive to promote positive relationships, empathy, and understanding among the diverse members of our class, school, and community.
