My ninth graders come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of their communities suffer from high-poverty and crime rates. My students and their families face daily struggles; yet, they push through the harsh realities of life and wake up every morning, hop on the bus, and enter my classroom. The majority of the students in my class reads below grade level and has a difficult time with written and oral English language conventions; however, their current academic barriers do not suppress their drive to learn. They recognize the value of a quality education and they walk into to my class ready and determined to attain it. The efforts in my class are devoted to helping my students overcome the obstacles that hinder a student’s ability to enjoy, embrace, and understand the words they read.
