Some students might grow up in homes where they are taught how to build and fix things and are given the tools to do so, but I have found that the majority of my middle school students have not been exposed to these important learning opportunities. Using a hammer and nails or playing with magnets and gears is new and fascinating to them. My weekly STEAM classes are a safe place to learn, grow, and feel empowered. I am there to coach and cheer students on, and it's incredibly rewarding to hear them say they want to be engineers when they grow up. Funding this project will provide many items such as circuitry kits, plastic gears, marble runs, straw connectors, and coding toys for approximately 200 5th and 6th grade students so that they can discover how something works, how to build it, and how to fix it. This will help level the playing field so that all students acquire these crucial skills, regardless of their gender, socioeconomic status, or race.
