I work at a high-needs school where at least 30 percent of the students come from families with incomes below the poverty line. Our school is located in Jamaica, New York, and is part of our country's largest Special Education district. Students in our school come from very different backgrounds and ethnicities, but they also have a range of disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, and down syndrome. I teach a 3-5 grade 8:1:1 autism class where most of my students are non-verbal, not toilet trained, and have a range of aggressive behaviors and elopement issues. These children are constantly seeking sensory input to help regulate themselves and decrease self-injurious behavior.
