I will be beginning my 4th year as the Career Development Coordinator at my school. I have not had a full year in my office/career center. Due to COVID-19, students have not been in the building in 2 years. I struggle to get students to want to come to the career center to sit and talk with me about their future endeavors. Through this project, and with the help of DonorsChoose, I will be able to create a more welcoming environment for my students. It takes a lot for my students to open up and talk about their future goals. My office use to be a storage room for the media center. Items and furniture that I currently have had been recycled, discarded, or passed down. The couch will give them a place to sit and relax as they explore their career options on their chromebooks. It will also give them a sense of comfort as they fill out their career exploration surveys. My goal is to get to know my students and establish a rapport with them, and having an inviting and warm place to do so will make them feel welcomed. Our resources are very limited here and our students go through so much at home to where they need a safe place to feel the love. I have created a brand/name for our career center: The WM A.C.C.E.S.S Center. (A.C.C.E.S.S.- Aspiring College & Career Efforts for Student Success!). With the help of DonorsChoose, I can continue to aspire students to sit down and relax as they prepare for success.
